Sink Removal and Stainless Steel TIG Welding for a London Restaurant

Client: High-traffic restaurant in Central London

Project Scope: Modify an existing stainless steel worktop by removing an outdated sink and covering the space with a seamlessly welded stainless steel plate to create a smooth, durable surface.

Overview: The client, a busy restaurant in London, needed to optimise their workspace and wanted to remove a small, underused sink from one of their stainless steel prep stations. Instead of replacing the entire worktop, they looked for a cost-effective solution to cover the opening with a flush, food-safe surface that could handle the demands of a commercial kitchen.

The Solution

  1. Preparation and Removal: I began by carefully dismantling the plumbing and removing the sink without damaging the surrounding stainless steel. The existing unit was secured in place, and I made sure that all steps were taken to keep the workspace clean and safe throughout the process.
  2. Custom Stainless Steel Plate Fabrication: I fabricated a custom stainless steel plate to match the dimensions of the removed sink area, ensuring it fit perfectly over the opening. Using high-quality, food-grade stainless steel, we ensured that the new surface would blend seamlessly with the existing unit.
  3. TIG Welding for a Seamless Finish: Using TIG welding, known for its precision and clean results, we welded the stainless steel plate in place. TIG welding was the ideal choice for this job, as it creates smooth, hygienic seams that are easy to clean and maintain. I ground down and polished the welded areas to ensure a consistent look and feel across the entire worktop.
  4. Final Touches: Once the welding and polishing were complete, I inspected the surface to ensure a flawless finish that met the client’s standards. The end result was a sturdy, seamless stainless steel surface with no visible trace of the former sink opening.

Outcome

The client was thrilled with the result, noting that the new worktop provided additional prep space while maintaining the clean, modern look of their kitchen. My TIG welding expertise allowed me to create a hygienic, durable solution that supports the restaurant’s high standards of cleanliness and efficiency. By repurposing the existing unit rather than replacing it, I saved the client time and expense, allowing them to continue their operations with minimal disruption.

The worktop looks fantastic! Paul did an amazing job. The area where the sink used to be is completely seamless, and we’re grateful for the extra prep space. Highly recommended for anyone looking for expert commercial kitchen modifications.
